Call Upon the Gods

A D&D homebrew feature that encourages roleplay with the gods by rewarding those of a pious nature with divine favour.

Although divine beings rarely intervene directly in the daily affairs of mortals, their subtle answers serve as a constant reminder of their presence and power. Anyone may pray to any deity at any time, but the gods favour those who actively cultivate a connection through consistent devotion. It is for this reason that clerics and paladins, whose lives are bound to divine service, are most frequently the ones to receive an answer.

Once per long rest, roll a d100 and add the bonuses described below. A total result of 100 or higher is a success.

On a success, the deity answers the character’s question with ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. The deity will always answer truthfully to the best of their knowledge. If the question pertains to information beyond the deity’s knowledge, you might receive an ‘unclear’ response. If a one-word answer could be misleading or contrary to the deity’s interests, the DM may provide a short phrase as an answer instead.

Relevance Bonus

  • Directly Related (+5 Bonus): the deity’s portfolio, e.g. praying to Silvanus to ask if the blight currently rotting the local village’s crops is natural or magical in origin.
  • Vaguely Related (+2 Bonus): only loosely tied to the deity’s portfolio, e.g. praying to Tempus to ask if a given location is an ideal spot for ambushing the opponent.
  • Unrelated (+0 Bonus): no connection to the deity’s portfolio.

Devotion Bonus

  • Devoted (+10 Bonus): The character actively follows their faith through daily prayers, small offerings, upholding tenets when inconvenient, or visiting temples.
  • Active (+5 Bonus): The character generally respects their deity and occasionally brings them up, but doesn’t go out of their way for them.
  • Neglectful (+0 Bonus): The character treats the deity as an afterthought, ignoring tenets or going long stretches without acknowledgment.
  • Disfavoured (-10 Penalty): The character has recently acted in direct defiance of the deity’s core tenets.
